Precedence Constrained Scheduling to Minimize Sum of Weighted Completion Times on a Single Machine

چکیده
We consider the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on a single machine with the objective of minimizing sum of weighted completion times. The problem is NP-hard when there are precedence constraints between jobs 15]. We provide an eecient com-binatorial 2-approximation algorithm for this problem. In contrast to our work, earlier approximation algorithms 12] achieving constant factor approximations are based on solving a linear programming relaxation of the problem. We also show that the linear ordering relaxation of Potts 20] has an integrality gap of 2.

A 2.542-approximation for precedence constrained single machine scheduling with release dates and total weighted completion time objective
We present a √ e/( √ e−1)-approximation algorithm for the nonpreemptive scheduling problem to minimize the total weighted completion time of jobs on a single machine subject to release dates and precedence constraints. The previously best known approximation algorithm dates back to 1997; its performance guarantee can be made arbitrarily close to the Euler constant e [18].

In this paper, a due date assignment scheduling problem with precedence constraints and controllable processing times in uncertain environment is investigated, in which the basic processing time of each job is assumed to be the symmetric trapezoidal fuzzy number, and the linear resource consumption function is used. The objective is to minimize the crisp possibilistic mean (or expected) value of...
متن کاملA half-integral linear programming relaxation for scheduling precedence-constrained jobs on a single machine
We present a new linear programming relaxation for the problem of minimizing the sum of weighted completion times of precedence-constrained jobs. Given a set of n jobs, each job j has processing time p j and weight w j. There is also a partial order on the execution of the jobs: if j k, job k may not start processing before job j has been completed. For C j representing the completion time of j...
متن کاملA Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm for a Possibilistic Open Shop Problem to Minimize Weighted Mean Tardiness and Weighted Mean Completion Times
We consider an open shop scheduling problem. At first, a bi-objective possibilistic mixed-integer programming formulation is developed. The inherent uncertainty in processing times and due dates as fuzzy parameters, machine-dependent setup times and removal times are the special features of this model. The considered bi-objectives are to minimize the weighted mean tardiness and weighted mean co...

In this paper we survey recent results on the precedence constraint single machine scheduling problem to minimize the weighted sum of completion times. We show how we can benefit from known results in dimension theory of partial orders to obtain improved approximate solutions when precedence constraints have low fractional dimension. We believe that dimension theory of partial orders could be o...
